Current Concerns

My anticipation is tortuously building for Michael's birthday party, while most of the arrangements have been made, presents wrapped, I still have a lot to do before his birthday.

Besides the stress and excitement of him turning one, I can't help but think what this next year will bring, how much he will grow, learn, and become by next March.

I have a lot going through my head right now, I'm very worried about finances, my Son being able to get in to things a lot easier, when I go to college how it will take a toll on my family relationship wise, if Michael's going to learn to walk on time, and advance in other ways on time as well.

We've also been discussing when, and how to start potty training Michael. I've heard from some other parents that it's harder toilet training boys, then it is girls, I'm not sure how much truth there is to that though.

I feel a bit alone in this big adventure with my Son and I really have no one to turn to for advice on any of it either, which makes it even more stressful!

Hey sweetness i wish the best of luck to you with your little man! I don't have any kids but ive been babysitting for about 10 years now, and im my experiences my nephew which i took care of during the day 5 days out of the week i potty trained he was very stubborn and didn't want to try at all till he was almost 2. The thing that finally got him was we would put a piece of cereal in the toilet and tell him to try and pee on it and he loved that idea and eventually got the hang of it, he refused to sit down or try anything else.

Im now taking care of a little girl 4 days a week, I worry about her because she is 16 months old and she's is so tiny and way behind. She is still on formula due to her being so small, she wont drink out a cup or a bottle sitting up only laying down. She also is not trying to walk yet, i work with her everyday taking her by her hands and walking and she wont go... she throws herself down. She's hasn't been saying anything more than dada either but here the pass week we have heard ang and shit come out her mouth several times so she seems to be progressing. She also just started pointing when she wants something.

hmmm... I worry so much about a child that is not even my own, I can only imagine what it will be like with my own.

The one thing I learned raising two boys, is you can't force potty training. He does not have to be potty trained by 2 years old, no matter what your friends or neighbors say.

I ran a daycare business in my home for almost 16 years and the majority of boys were completely trained by 3 years old. Some were trained before 2 or by 2, but I found the happiest boys were the ones that were allowed to take their time in learning. I made it a game, I brought the boys in to watch one of the others using the potty. If they went, they would get a sugarless mint afterwards and everyone would make a big deal about him going. (clapping their hands, etc.)

You have to make it fun!

My one son trained himself by 18 months, but my younger son was almost 3 years old. Every child is different.

Good luck!

Thank you both for your kind supportive and informative advice! It's really comforting to hear that it's ok if he's not potty trained by the time he's 2.
